Is it difficult to be a creative person? What do people think?
I (23F) went out for a drink and meal with my friend (23F) the other day. We both work full-time and Monday is basically the only day we can meet, so we hadn't seen each other in 2–3 weeks and were really excited to catch up.
We went to a fairly popular chain pub in the UK. It was quite busy, although there were still some tables available when we arrived. We ordered our food and drinks and sat at a booth-style table. The table was definitely big enough for four people, but there were only two of us. We chose it because the pub was busy, and we thought that if a larger group needed the table, we'd obviously move or offer them the space.
We were sitting there chatting when two older men, probably in their 70s or 80s, came over and sat down at our table without asking.
One of them put his coat around the chair opposite me, while the other actually slid into the booth next to me.
My friend and I basically just stopped talking and looked at each other awkwardly because we weren't expecting anyone to sit with us. One of the men just said, "Boy, it's so busy today."
We pointed out that there seemed to be other tables available and that a table behind us had actually just become free. We were trying to hint that we'd rather they sat somewhere else rather than directly joining us.
The man sitting next to me basically said that they were just going to sit here.
We then mentioned that we'd already ordered food and drinks, maybe they thought we'd be leaving soon? He said that they were getting food too and smiled.
At that point, his friend picked up his coat and said something along the lines of, "Come on, it's clear they don't want us here."
The man sitting in the booth next to me then stood up and said, "It's clear when we're not wanted."
They left and we carried on with our meal. But felt a tad bit awkward and off after that as to us it just felt really odd
Now I'm wondering whether we were actually being rude? I understand that the table technically seats four people, and I don't have a problem sharing a table if a pub is genuinely full. But in this case, there appeared to be other tables available.
It also felt particularly strange to me that they chose to sit directly at a table with two young women who were already eating/drinking, rather than simply asking if they could share?
So, AITA for making it clear that we didn't want them to sit with us? Is sharing tables with strangers something that's considered completely normal in UK pubs. Should we have just left it and pretended like they weren't there
EDIT: just a quick edit to explain some things, if the men were young we would've still been creeped out. I can see what people mean by their ages not being necessary in this, I only mentioned it to give as much context as possible.
I love talking to new people on nights out, there's honestly nothing better and when it's the right mood I can sit and talk to a stranger for ages. But I have been going through a lot of personal stuff this month, nearly lost someone close to me so I personally just wanted to have a nice drink and meal with my close friend and talk about it because it's been a really tough month.
the booth I was sat in was a weird right angle booth so I was trapped in which is why I felt particularly uncomfortable
And yes it was a Spoons (Wetherspoons) I assumed it was mostly Americans on here so thought if I just said spoons they'd be confused 😂
I also should mentioned about 5 minutes after they had left, I got up to go get some condiments for me and my friend. And saw a different area that was blocked off from our point of view in the booth. And pretty much the ENTIRE area was free
